Green Care Project Initiative
Green Care is a well-established international concept that uses animals, plants and nature in an interactive process to offer health-promoting activities for people. With this concept in mind our programs are designed to support transitioning young adults through animal and nature based programming utilizing humane education within the following areas; agriculture, horticulture, arboriculture, animal care and other nature based areas. By encompassing these specific service areas and changing the role of the individual from service receiver to service assistant they build a sense of responsibility, self-efficacy, empathy and compassion as well as establish personal boundaries and most importantly teamwork and leadership skills.
Our philosophy is that if our at risk young adults are given a chance to explore their natural strengths in a trauma informed, safe, nature-based environment caring for animals and plants while being mentored by caring adults, then those strengths will develop with a sense of responsibility and pride.
Young people whose trust has been shattered by negative life experiences are far more likely to succeed in a Green Care program because they are dealing directly with nature. Animals don’t ask questions, nature doesn't judge, and strong mentors never share confidential information. In a technology driven world, we have forgotten the simple concept that bringing recovery and nature together can be life changing.
Under Patchwork Pastures Exclusive Green Care Project Initiative, we foster the connection between the participant, the animals and nature. Green Care services complement the supply of public welfare services, while increasing the possibilities of success for individuals served.

Parents, Participants and Professionals
As parents of children in recovery and animal lovers our small animal sanctuary and our amazing team is committed to bringing recovery and nature together. We have experienced multiple challenges including the ongoing struggles of raising children with significant mental health challenges, traumatic life experiences and supporting our children in long term recovery from opioid and heroin addiction; we have certainly walked the walk.
We have taken our life experience, our challenges, our successes, our convictions and our recovery and turned it into action creating a unique 5 step Green Care Project Initiative focusing on at risk youth and young adults. Patchwork Pastures Green Care Project Initiative incorporates animals, plants, gardens, forest, and the landscapes including but not limited to livestock management, crop production, forestry, horticultural and greenhouse activities, promoting holistic healing opportunities and educational experiences.
All too often the stigma associated with addiction, mental health or incarceration forces an individual to feel hopeless, alone and afraid. More often families have disowned their family member not realizing they haven't yet reached their full potential or found that perfect niche to a successful life. Patchwork Pastures unique 5 Step Green Care Project initiative is multi fold, providing a safe and humbling educational experience while providing life skill training in supportive green environments, with increased focus on long term effects including reducing recidivism and creating long term employment opportunities.
We focus positive impacts while looking to create partnerships with local farms, greenhouses, landscapers and other nature based green companies who would be supportive of bringing on and mentoring our participants. Each participant is coached, monitored, trained and supported on their journey. Our members and volunteers provide the momentum that helps us to continue to do good work.
Our animals provide us with the solace that only a huggable turkey can bring.
Nature Based Programming
Our Green Care Project Initiative is an evidence based nature based program incorporating animals and nature with life coaching and life skills programming. Participants seeking alternatives to traditional life skills programs and life coaching have an opportunity to choose their passion and be paired with a green industry of their choice upon completion of the initial program.
